Beta-haemolytic streptococci and antistreptolysin-O titres in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and a matched control group.

چکیده
Since 1935 several reports have dealt with the antistreptolysin-O (ASO) titre in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The mean and the upper ASO values were first established in a group of normal subjects and in patients with no history of recent streptococcal illness, and subsequently the distribution of the ASO titres was recorded in patients suffering from RA. Table I summarizes the results of Blair and Hallman (1935), Dawson and Olmstead (1936), Longcope (1936), Goldie and Griffiths (1936), Bunim and McEwen (1940), Winblad (1941), Westergren and Stavenow (1947), van Loghem-Langereis (1950), Oker-Blom and Widholm (1952), Quinn and Liao (1952), Jacqueline, Eyquem, and Jochem (1954), Otten and Westendorp Boerma (1959). These results are very divergent; most studies show higher ASO titres in patients with RA, but the significance

Various rheumatic syndromes in adult patients associated with high antistreptolysin O titres and their differential diagnosis with rheumatic fever.
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to analyse retrospectively adult patients with acute joint or muscle symptoms and a high antistreptolysin O (ASO) titre to find out which syndromes of clinical arthritis are associated with serological evidence of streptococcal infection. METHODS Seventy six adult patients with an acute arthritis syndrome or an exacerbation in their chronic rheumatic d...

Streptococcal Agglutination In I929 Cecil and his colleagues observed that the sera of patients with rheumatoid arthritis had the property of agglutinating a specific strain of haemolytic streptococcus in high titre, and as this property was not present in the sera of control subjects, concluded that it was a specific manifestation of the disease (Cecil et al., 1929, I931). Later it was found t...

متن کاملA clinical and serological comparison of group A versus non-group A streptococcal reactive arthritis and throat culture negative cases of post-streptococcal reactive arthritis.
OBJECTIVE To identify clinical and serological differences of patients with reactive arthritis after infection with Lancefield group A beta-haemolytic streptococci (GAS), compared with non-group A-that is, group C or G streptococci (NGAS:GCS/GGS), and a group of culture negative or unidentified streptococci (GUS). METHODS A prospective study of consecutive patients with reactive arthritis aft...
متن کاملPrevalence and Haemolytic Significance of Red Cell Antibodies among Dangerous Universal Donors in a Tertiary Care Hospital in South India
Background and Aims: A subgroup of group O individuals called ‘dangerous universal donors’ have immune (IgG) anti A and anti B antibodies which are active at 37˚C and capable of reacting with the red cells and causing lysis. The aim of this study was to find the prevalence of dangerous O group among the voluntary donor population and to assess the relation between the degree of haemolysis and t...
